85 Hardcover QH315 This handbook for high school biology teachers stems from the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS), a research and development organization established in 1958 to improve the quality of biology education at all levels.
Each lesson follows a common format for teaching inquiry-based science: the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study 5E Instructional Model (Bybee 1997).
In 1995, I became executive director of The Center for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education at the National Academies where my work completing and disseminating the Standards continued until 1999, when I returned to Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS).

It was developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) in the early 1990s as a derivative of the 1960s Science Curriculum Improvement Study's (SC IS) three-step learning cycle and has been used in several BSCS elementary and middle school curricula (for a description of the 5E, see Trowbridge, Bybee, & Carlson Powell, 2000).
