In early Alzheimer's, the ability to retrieve memories is lost, not the memories themselves and the reason is that cells, called basal forebrain cholinergic neurons, are killed.
Basal forebrain cholinergic neurons project their axons to the cerebral cortex, striatum, amygdala, and hippocampus (Whitehouse et at 1982; Amaral and Witter 1989), where they release acetylcholine to mediate attention, learning and memory (Sarter and Parikh 2005).
Neonatal lesions of the basal forebrain cholinergic neurons result in abnormal cortical development.
