The musical, which has a score by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin, began in the Berkshires at Barrington Stage Company, moved to off-Broadway's Second Stage Theatre and finally to Broadway's Circle in the Square where it opened May 2, 2005.
When Sheinkin says cafeteria, she means the actual cafeteria at Barrington Stage Company, a former public school transformed into a theater, where "Putnam County Spelling Bee" was workshopped in 2004.
Created by the Tony-winning composer/lyricist William Finn, with book by Rachel Sheinkin, concept by Rebecca Feldman, and direction by James Lapine, Spelling Bee originated at a lesser-known regional theater, Barrington Stage Company in Massachusetts.
