Woodson, historian and founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) in 1915, and Lorenzo J.
Woodson, another Harvard graduate, organized the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History.
Reflecting their growing commitment to the historical profession, black scholars soon founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (1915), the Journal of Negro History (1916), Negro History Week (1916), and the Negro History Bulletin (1933).
Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History by leading the New York branch of this organization.
Woodson traveled throughout his life, from a poor childhood to a college education, secondary teacher, principal, college professor, historian, writer, publisher, architect of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915 and founder of Negro History Week (1926) which became known as Black History Month in the early 1970s.
Then in 1950, the historian Charles Wesley wrote to Du Bois, informing him that in the wake of Carter Woodson's death, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History had decided to resurrect The Encyclopedia Africana project, reminding him of Woodson's claims to have conceived of it in 1921.
Bethune was also the National President of the organization that Woodson founded in 1915--the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History from 1935-1950.
