What does AV stand for?

Most camera users use the auto mode, where in dark situations the camera decides the shutter speed, aperture value and then pops the flash, leading to almost black backgrounds and very bright foregrounds.

In this manner I could still use a small aperture value and maintain a good depth of field.

When using a Canon camera body, the Aperture value mode gives you accurate metering or when using a digital SLR camera, make sure to check the histogram.
