Anti-tachycardia pacing debated too Another debate session dealt with anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP), specifically asking whether ATP function should be programmed into all ICDs.
NYSE: MDT) OMNI Study were released today at Heart Rhythm 2009, the annual congress of the Heart Rhythm Society, revealing that one out of six patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) or cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillators (CRT-Ds) to prevent sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), received potentially life-saving medical therapy - either in the form of anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) or a shock for dangerously fast heart rhythms - within a period of two years following their implant.
It said the use of this anti-tachycardia pacing to stop fast heartbeats has been clinically proven to eliminate three out of four shocks with painless therapy, potentially improving patient quality of life.
Of note, evidence further demonstrating the clinical benefit of painless anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) will be presented.
The CRT-Ds also deliver anti-tachycardia pacing, cardioversion and defibrillation to immediately treat life-threatening ventricular tachyarrhythmias, which can lead to sudden cardiac death.
It rapidly converts the abnormal rhythm back to normal by delivering anti-tachycardia pacing pulses or an electrical shock to the heart.
This therapy may take the form of anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) or electrical shock (known as defibrillation).
PARAD+, another unique feature, enables OVATIO DR to discriminate Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) from Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) down to heart rates of 100 bpm and treat any ventricular arrhythmias with anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) in all zones, providing this as first-line therapy saves patients from unnecessary shocks that may traumatize them as well as reduce device longevity.
