WHILE the buying and selling of paintings had been a serious part-time endeavour since the founding of Alfred Bader Fine Arts in 1961, the author turned a greater share of his considerable energies to that work after his 1992 "expulsion" from the board of Sigma-Aldrich, a world leader in the supply of chemicals, created in 1975 through the merger of St Louis-based Sigma and Aldrich, the research chemical supply company Bader co-founded with $500 in 1951 in a Milwaukee garage.
