The Wide Field Camera 3 and Cosmic Origins Spectrograph were installed and the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph were successfully repaired.
On Saturday, spacewalkers John Grunsfeld and Drew Feustel breezed through a similar but less demanding repair of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys, a heavily used seven-year-old instrument that encountered a disabling electrical short in early 2007.
In the meantime, the telescopes Advanced Camera for Surveys and its Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph remain idle after breakdowns in 2004 and 2007.
Glitches since 2007 have put a few of the telescope's instruments out of operation, including the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer.
Over the course of five strenuous spacewalks, astronauts will also work to repair cameras and equipment that have degraded or failed, including the Advanced Camera for Surveys, which produced many of the HubbleCOs most dramatic images.
The image is a composite of data collected in 2003 and 2005 by the telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys.
While other scientific work can still be done by the aging observatory, the unit that failed, the Advanced Camera for Surveys, is the one most scientists depend upon.
