2000 Adults With Incapacity Act In the first major piece of legislation passed by Holyrood, the Scottish parliament addresses a hugely complex area that's of deep concern to more than 100,000 families across the country.
The new legislation will be a part of the Mental Capacity Act later this year, mirroring the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act.
The Adults with Incapacity Act was designed to protect vulnerable patients who are too ill to give consent to treatment.
Under the Adults with Incapacity Bill, gay couples will be treated in the same way as people in heterosexual marriages.
The first law to be affected by any change would be the Adults with Incapacity Bill, now being considered by the parliament.
That is the question at the heart of the current debate over the so-called 'living wills' which could become commonplace if the draft Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Bill, now before the Scottish parliament, becomes law.
But representatives of the Roman Catholic Church say the draft Adults With Incapacity (Scotland) Bill will effectively establish the principle of people drawing up a legal document asserting the right to die if they fall ill.
In evidence to the Scottish parliament's justice committee the groups claimed the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Bill raised the possibility of patients being deprived of food and fluids at the insistence of a relative empowered to take that decision.
