Considering the acceleration time history of the Manjil earthquake and its long duration, it can be seen that, in contrast to the Kobe and El Centro earthquakes in which the damage to the structure occurs in a short duration of the ground motion, the damage to the structure caused by the Manjil earthquake occurs continually during the whole duration of the earthquake.
The PEER project, "Parameterization of Non-Stationary Acceleration Time History," will examine two techniques used to model the impact of intense ground motion from large magnitude earthquakes on structures: scaling up the amplitude of real recordings from smaller earthquakes and artificially simulating recordings of large earthquakes.
